The Smithsonian Institution has been developing a collaboration with Pembroke College at Oxford University for some years.  James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institution, is one of Pembroke College’s most eminent alumni. Most recently, we had a joint fellow in 2018-2019, joint interns at Mpala Research Center (Kenya) in 2019, and a joint research symposium in 2019.  Our plans got derailed by the pandemic in 2020-2021, but we are pleased to announce the return of a joint fellowship for three years, beginning in October 2021.

The fellowship will be based at Pembroke College, but intended to collaborate meaningfully with Smithsonian collections, facilities and/or expertise. The fellowship will involve 90% pursuing individual research and 10% furthering bonds between the Smithsonian Institution and Oxford University. The program particularly welcomes candidates whose research is in an area represented amongstPembroke’s fellowship, though applications are welcome from all disciplines related to the Smithsonian Institution.  Collaboration through ForestGEO or Mpala Research Centre is also encouraged.

Applications are DUE July 9, 2021 by 12 noon.
