Lafayette College announces a full-time, tenure-track position in the Africana Studies Program at the rank of assistant professor, beginning July 1, 2021, with specialization in contemporary African American life and culture. Africana Studies at Lafayette is a vibrant program of over a dozen faculty members who teach in departments of literature, history, government, anthropology, economics, and religious studies.

The successful candidate in this search will preferably, but not necessarily,  be a specialist trained in history, political science, anthropology or sociology.  Applicants from interdisciplinary programs are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should have demonstrable competence in teaching, and they would be expected to teach the introductory course in Africana Studies and other Africana Studies core courses, such as Black Experience. Additional courses that focus on the Black diasporic experience in the Americas and topics that reflect the candidate’s own research area are also expected. Expertise in teaching about mass incarceration and its effects would be valued. AFS requires applications from candidates with a doctorate (in hand or expected by August 2021). The teaching load is 2/2 in the first year, and 3/2 thereafter. Evidence of a promising scholarly trajectory in the applicant’s areas of expertise is expected.
